How to Create Effective Point-of-Sale Materials

Point-of-sale (POS) materials are often the final brand touchpoint before a purchase decision is made. There is no salesperson present, no pitch, no real-time recommendation.

The display on the gondola end or pallet stack carries the entire weight of the consumer interaction. Whether it earns attention or loses it comes down to how well it was briefed, designed, and produced. From format selection to production quality, several decisions shape that outcome.

1. Start With Where and How the Material Will Be Used

Effective point-of-sale execution begins with placement context. A gondola end in a supermarket aisle works under different conditions than a hanging mobile above a promotional zone or a heavy pallet stack at a warehouse entrance. Viewing distance, foot traffic volume, and durability requirements all vary by position.

Before design begins, check the fixture type and the surface the material attaches to or stands on. These variables determine structural format, material choice, and how the design hierarchy needs to be established:

  • A shelf strip adheres to the shelf edge

  • A freestanding floor display needs a stable base suited to the floor surface

  • A hanging mobile requires suspension hardware suited to the ceiling height.

2. Match the Format to the Job

Gondola end and aisle displays suit campaign launches, seasonal promotions, and category disruption. Each additional POS marketing format carries its own functional requirements and production constraints:

  • Pallet Stack Displays: These support high-volume, price-led campaigns where structural integrity under product weight is crucial.

  • Freestanding Standees: No matter the size of your pull-up banner, it will require a structure that stands without fixings. Still, you’ll have a display that is both versatile and relocatable.

  • Hangsell and Shelf Strips: These operate at close range, influencing the final purchase decision at the point where print quality is under direct scrutiny.

  • Hanging Mobiles: Suited to high-ceiling retail environments, hanging mobiles are ideal where suspension hardware and venue access form part of the planning brief.

3. Get the Design Right Before Production Starts

Campaign artwork designed for digital or out-of-home formats rarely translates into effective point-of-sale material without adaptation. To ensure that the material aligns with the environment, consider these design decisions:

  • Artwork Legibility: The design should remain legible on whatever format it will be printed on, whether it’s a curved surface, a textured substrate, or a moving trolley.

  • Working with a Design Expert: At Ad Create, we have an experienced creative team that can flag these issues before they become production problems. When you choose us as your print and fabrication partner, we’ll adapt your existing brand assets into POS-ready formats.

4. Design for the Retail Environment, Not the Presentation Deck

Point-of-sale materials designed for a pitch presentation can look very different once they are in a retail environment. These design factors determine whether the material is suitable for the marketing context:

  • Colour Accuracy: POS sits alongside product packaging, and any discrepancy in brand colour is immediately visible to the consumer.

  • Typography and Hierarchy: The design needs to deliver a single dominant message that cuts through the visual noise.

  • Finish Selection: Gloss and matte finishes perform differently under various environments. Gloss lamination creates glare under fluorescent retail lighting, while matte and soft-touch finishes maintain readability across the display.

  • Structural Design: Materials must account for retail handling, including staff moving, adjusting, and reassembling without specialist knowledge.

5. Build to a Standard the Retail Environment Demands

Substrate choice affects point-of-sale performance in ways that only become apparent during or after production. Lightweight materials warp under humidity, and thin boards lose structural integrity when product weight is applied.

Several production factors determine whether the finished material performs well in demanding retail environments:

  • Print Calibration: Colour drift between units becomes visible when the same material appears across multiple locations. Ensure that the output is consistent across the full production run.

  • Edge and Finish Quality: Raw or poorly finished edges signal low production value at close range, where consumers are making purchase decisions.

  • Consider an In-House Team: When print and fabrication are managed under one roof, material compatibility and finish consistency are controlled throughout the process rather than reviewed at the end.

6. Brief for Retail, Not Just for Production

A production brief that omits retail reality results in materials that are technically well-made but completely unusable in-store. Your brief must look beyond dimensions and raw artwork files.

  • Retail Environment Details: Include the store format, fixture type, location, and any retailer installation guidelines governing how the material is deployed.

  • Campaign Duration: Materials running for two weeks require different specifications than those installed for three months. The brief should state this upfront.

  • Installation Responsibility: Confirm whether the production partner provides on-site setup support, and factor this into the project timeline.
