Choosing the Right Booth Materials for Your Event

Event booth material failures are costly, disruptive, and entirely avoidable. A warped panel in a premium exhibition space, a structure that degrades after its second roadshow, and a build that looks pristine in the 3D render but flimsy on the show floor are not fabrication accidents. They are briefing failures.


The material of your event booth dictates more than just aesthetics. It determines how long the setup takes, structural longevity and venue compliance. Ultimately, the material determines whether the finished product matches the design. 


From timber and MDF to aluminium, acrylic, and hybrid combinations, there are several materials used in event booth structures, which are variables you must consider to ensure your design successfully translates to reality. 


The Four Questions That Should Drive Your Material Choice


Before comparing materials or requesting quotes, you must establish the operational scope of the booth by addressing four critical variables: 


1. How Many Times Will This Booth Be Used?


A one-day brand activation has different material requirements than a booth built for quarterly roadshows. Single-use builds allow you to prioritise cost-efficiency and surface finish over long-term structural integrity. Conversely, repeated-use structures require durable materials and heavy-duty joinery methods designed to survive the rigours of continuous assembly and disassembly. 


2. Will it Be Used Indoors, Outdoors, or Both?


Humidity, temperature fluctuations, and direct sunlight change which materials perform reliably. A finish that looks flawless in an air-conditioned exhibition hall may warp, fade, or delaminate within hours of outdoor exposure. If your booth is slated to move between indoor and outdoor environments, the material specification must default to the harshest expected condition. 


3. What Are the Venue's Weight and Fixing Restrictions?


Material selection cannot happen in a vacuum. Many premium event spaces enforce strict weight limits and explicitly prohibit floor drilling or overhead suspension. To avoid costly, last-minute redesigns after production has already commenced, venue guidelines must be vetted before the event fabrication brief is finalised.


4. Does it Need to Be Transported and Reassembled, or Is it a One-Location Build?


Portability requirements affect which materials and joinery methods are viable. A booth that needs to be flat-packed, transported across markets, and rebuilt by a local team on-site has different structural requirements than one that is built once and stays put.

Every material used in event construction has a distinct performance threshold. The decision logic is straightforward: align the material to the operational demand, not just the visual concept.

1. Timber and MDF: Best for Bespoke, Indoor, Single-Use Builds 


Timber and MDF remain the most widely used materials for event booth carpentry. Both are workable, paintable, and capable of achieving clean finishes across a wide range of brand aesthetics.


Timber and MDF perform well in indoor activations where the structure will not be exposed to moisture. For one-off structures, they are cost-effective and give fabricators flexibility to achieve bespoke shapes and integrated features that modular systems cannot easily replicate. 


The Caveat: They lack longevity. Joints and edges degrade with repeated assemblies and disassemblies, making timber and MDF less practical for booths that need to travel and be rebuilt throughout a roadshow calendar.


2. Aluminium and Steel: Best for High-Frequency, Multi-Market Roadshows 


Aluminium and steel are better suited to structures that need to be dismantled, transported, and rebuilt multiple times. If a booth is central to your exhibition collaterals across several markets, consider metal-framed structures. Compared to timber, these metals are worth the higher upfront fabrication investment, because the structure stands strong through repeated

structures rather than degrading at the fixings:


  • Aluminium: This construction material is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making it the practical choice for outdoor events or regional roadshows where the same structure travels between different locations. 

  • Steel: This offers greater load-bearing capacity for heavier installations but adds weight to the transport equation. 


3. Acrylic: Best for High-Visibility Feature Elements 


Acrylic is used for feature elements rather than primary structure: display panels, backlit signage inserts, and product display surfaces. It delivers a premium visual finish and integrates well with large-format print elements when lighting is built into the booth design.


The trade-off is fragility under impact. Acrylic is not ideal for high-traffic environments without protective framing around exposed edges and corners. 


4. Hybrid Builds

Most well-specified event booths combine materials rather than sticking with one. A timber or aluminium frame with acrylic feature panels, metal fixings, and print elements for pull-up banners or backdrops is a common and practical combination. Each material does what it does best, and the structure benefits from the strengths of all of them.


The critical factor in a hybrid structure is how the junction points between materials are designed. When those materials come from separate suppliers, the junction points are where problems tend to appear on site. A reliable fabricator with an in-house team experienced with timber, metal, and acrylic can resolve those details before production starts. 


What to Tell Your Fabricator Before They Quote


The more context a fabricator has, the more accurate the booth material recommendation will be. Before you ask for a quote, review these tradeshow booth design best practices:


  • Confirm the venue type, whether indoor or outdoor, and any restrictions on fixing methods or maximum structural weight.

  • State how many times the booth will be used and whether it will travel between locations or markets.

  • Share the design render or visual brief so that material choices also support the intended aesthetic.

  • To check if they’re confident and experienced enough, ask the fabricator to specify which materials they are proposing and let them explain their reasoning.
